WHAT'S NEW FOR 20105K Race. In an effort to expand interest and participation in the AK 10K Classic Road Race, the race committee decided to add a 5K race in 2009. We've selected what we believe is a very nice and mostly flat course that allows entrants to conveniently park near the traditional finish, walk or jog the 4- 5 blocks to the race start at Elderberry Park, W 5th Ave and N St, run the first 2 miles on the Coastal Trail and finish along the shaded streets of Bootlegger Cove. And with most of this course separated from the 10K course, any congestion will be minimized, and both 5K and 10K entrants should be well spread out by the time they might meet along the common last mile of these 2 races. Chip Timing. After struggling over a number of years with bandits, resolving timing discrepancies and delayed timing results, the AK 10K Classic race committee decided to try chip timing in 2009. Entrants, (with the exception of the youth relay leg 1 entrants who won't have chips) will return their chips in the finishing chute after finishing their race. Anyone who registers and is issued a chip is responsible for returning that chip even if they do not race. If they do not return their chip, they will be charged $25. We're looking forward to an efficient and smooth timing program this year, and subsequent quickly listed and accurate times, plus awards within 30 to 60 minutes of finishing. Changes To The 10K Course. Because of road construction along the A St and 9th Ave portion of the traditional 10K course, the race committee found it necessary to change the course for 2009. The 10K race will move off the streets both in the University area and along A and 9th, and onto the Chester Creek Trail System. In addition it will conclude its final mile through the streets of Bootlegger Cove (much like a few of the famous races of the 70s and 80s did). Entrants are encouraged to contact the race director after running their race this year, and letting him know their opinion concerning the 2009 course changes.
