Healthy Futures Youths

Welcome to the 23rd Alaska 10K Classic Road Race -- one of the oldest active road races in Alaska. The ‘10K Classic’ has a rich racing history including participation by various famous runners. Don Clary holds the record time for this race, 28:35 set in 1987. In 1986, Alberto Salazar, who won the 1982 Boston Marathon and was on the 1980 Olympics team, came in second to Don in this race with a time of 29:26. In 1990 at the peak of its popularity, this race had nearly 1000 participants. Our long term goal is to get back to this level of participation.

This race is partnered with Special Olympics Alaska. As such, all funds that this race is able to generate through sponsor donations and race entry fees, in excess of the cost of putting on this race, go to Special Olympics. This past year the race raised $6500.00 for SOA, with about 300 entrants.

Youth Relay Race

We hope you enjoy the youth relay race that has been created for you this year. This race is a Healthy Futures sponsored event, for elementary through high school youths. Each student who turns in a qualifying activity/fitness log to their physical education teacher will not only ‘get fit’ but also get cool stuff ! Check out the Youth Incentive Rewards Program at www.healthyfuturesak.org.

To complete the 10K distance, each of 2 youths will run or walk 5K.

The following are the procedures established for the Youth Relay:

  • 1) Relay teams will have special bib numbers that identify first and second relay runners/walkers – XXX-1 and XXX-2. You will need to state that you are running the youth relay, and who is running first and second, at bib pickup/late registration.
  • 2) All youth relay team members will need to arrive at the APU Moseley Sports Center by 930AM. All team members running/walking the second leg of the race will be transported by bus to the exchange point [5K/ half way point on race course]. The bus[es] will leave APU at 945AM.sharp.
  • 3) There will be a port-a-potty and water at the exchange point. Second leg runners/walkers will be called by bib number as their relay team partner turns onto Maplewood Drive. When tagged by their partner, second leg runners/walkers will begin their leg.
  • 4) All first leg runners will be transported by bus from the exchange point to the finish of the race. The bus[es] will leave either when full or after all first leg runners/walkers have completed their leg and got on a bus.
  • 5) Healthy Futures finisher metals will be given to all relay team members. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards will be given to finishing team members in USATF youth age groups. Register at www.active.com [no add-on fee to register online]
